Government Urges Vigilance as Labour Ministry Warns Against Fraudulent Overseas Job Offers

The government has renewed its call for public vigilance following a warning from Alfred Mutua, Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection, over the rising number of fraudulent overseas job offers targeting unsuspecting Kenyans.

Speaking amid increased demand for foreign employment opportunities, the Labour Ministry cautioned job seekers to thoroughly verify recruitment agencies and travel arrangements before committing to work abroad. Officials noted that while legitimate opportunities exist, criminal networks continue to exploit vulnerable applicants through false promises.

Dr. Mutua emphasized the importance of due diligence, urging citizens to remain alert when approached with employment offers that appear rushed, unclear, or unusually attractive.

The advisory forms part of broader government efforts to safeguard Kenyan workers and promote structured labour migration under regulated frameworks. Authorities have continued to strengthen oversight mechanisms to ensure recruitment processes meet legal standards and protect the welfare of citizens seeking opportunities outside the country.

Labour migration remains an important pillar of economic empowerment for many households, contributing to remittances and supporting national development. However, officials stress that safe migration must be anchored in transparency, verification, and compliance with established procedures.

Security experts observe that fraudulent recruitment schemes often expose victims to exploitation, unsafe working conditions, or trafficking risks. Preventing such outcomes is increasingly viewed as both a social protection priority and a national security concern.

The government has encouraged prospective workers to rely on licensed agencies and official communication channels when pursuing employment abroad, reaffirming its commitment to protecting citizens from emerging transnational threats.
