Digital Deception: AI-Generated Misinformation in Modern Warfare

The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has not only unfolded on the battlefield but also in the digital information space. Artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly been used to create and spread fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, making it difficult for the public to distinguish between real and fabricated content. Social media platforms have been flooded with AI-generated videos, images, and claims that exaggerate events or depict incidents that never occurred.

One widely circulated example was a viral video claiming to show Iranian missiles striking Tel Aviv. Fact-checkers later found that the footage was AI-generated. Analysts identified several visual inconsistencies, including distorted vehicles, repetitive solar panels on rooftops, and broken smoke trails from the missiles. AI detection tools also suggested a very high probability that the clip had been digitally created rather than filmed during a real attack.

Another example involved dramatic videos showing missiles striking major Gulf landmarks such as Dubai’s Burj Khalifa and attacks in Bahrain. These clips spread widely on social media as supposed evidence of escalating regional warfare. However, fact-checking organizations used AI detection tools and image analysis to demonstrate that the scenes were fabricated using generative AI software.

Similarly, fake images claiming that Iranian forces destroyed a U.S. radar installation in Qatar circulated online. Investigations revealed that the images were synthetic and had no connection to real military events.

Misinformation has also targeted individuals. False rumors spread online claiming that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been assassinated or replaced by a digital double. The claims were based on a manipulated video that appeared to show him with six fingers, a common AI-generation error. Netanyahu later publicly dismissed the rumors

Experts warn that such AI-generated misinformation is becoming a powerful tool of information warfare. Fake videos and images can quickly gain millions of views online, shaping public perception and potentially escalating tensions during conflicts.

The US-Israel-Iran war demonstrates how AI technologies are transforming modern propaganda and disinformation campaigns. While AI tools can create convincing fake content, fact-checking organizations and digital forensic experts play a crucial role in debunking these false narratives and protecting the integrity of information during times of crisis.
