Kenyan Al-shabaab Member Jailed on Three Counts.

Abdikarim Hassanow Hassan, a Somali national also known as Ali, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after a Kenyan court found him guilty of multiple terrorism-related offences linked to the outlawed Al-Shabaab group. The court convicted him on charges including membership in a terrorist organisation, radicalisation, recruitment, facilitation of recruitment, organising meetings in support of a terrorist group, and financing travel for terrorism purposes. His actions included targeting a minor, whom he lured with promises of financial gain, military training, and religious reward.

The Kahawa Law Courts heard that Hassanow played a central role in influencing and preparing individuals for extremist activity, going as far as facilitating the minor’s attempted journey from Migori County to Somalia. He provided logistical guidance, travel routes, and financial support, demonstrating operational involvement beyond ideological alignment. Senior Principal Magistrate Boaz Ombewa ruled that the prosecution had proven all counts beyond reasonable doubt, citing credible and consistent testimony from the victim.

Each offence attracted a 10-year sentence, but the court ordered that they run concurrently, resulting in an effective 10-year jail term. The conviction underscores Kenya’s continued efforts to dismantle recruitment and radicalisation networks, particularly those targeting vulnerable individuals, and highlights the judiciary’s role in addressing the full chain of terrorism-related activities before they escalate into acts of violence.
